$40 towards $800

The Night Light Story Book Project is a joint 9th grade Engineering and Humanities project about literacy, electricity, and homelessness. For it, our students are paired with a kindergarten or first grade student at the Monarch School, a school for homeless youth in San Diego. For the humanities component of the project, our students are creating children's books for their buddies. In addition, they are learning about the causes and possible solutions to homelessness in the U.S., how one learns to read, barriers to literacy, and how we can create a successful reading initiative at our own school. For the engineering component, they are learning about circuitry, electrical engineering, and solar energy. So far, students have loved the project because they have such a tangible (and cute!) audience. They have particularly enjoyed visiting their buddies every other Tuesday. This project is also extremely important to my co-teacher and myself. Research has shown that struggling readers can improve their reading levels when they study the reading brain and teach others how to read. Since many of our students read below grade level, we are using this project as an intervention initiative to make sure that students don't begin high school already behind.

Your donations will go towards publishing and printing the storybooks, buying books for my classroom, and purchasing materials to 3D print and laser cut the nightlights.
